Do you have to make a conscious effort to breathe, or does your body do it for you automatically? The reason so many people drown is because an automatic reflex of the body is to draw in huge gulps of air when the flow of oxygen is cut off from the lungs. Our stupid human bodies are what kill us in these situations, and this is all done without having to make a single conscious thought.
So...when a worm begins to squirm because their nervous system goes into shock, are they consciously trying to avoid being squished, or are automatic reflexes kicking in? Perhaps you should read up on that before you make your fallacious analogies.
