My quick answer is "Assault Weapon Ban". A bunch of firearms were classified with this invented scare term based mostly on appearance.
Many firearms that were much more deadly were not on the banned list, but they didn't have some non-functional feature that made them 'evil'.
The reaction from gun owners is that there is either gross ignorance or a hidden agenda in these laws.
