The latter is the real problem for him. The GOP loved Rudy Giuliani for walking into liberal NYC and straightening it out, but not enough that he was a serious candidate for national office.
Besides, he hugged Obama. He's dead to the GOP base.
The problems that Giuliani faced when he considered national office (such as his liberal stance on issues like abortion, gay rights, gun control, etc) is the reverse of the problem Santorum will face in a general election. He cannot distance himself from his strong religious attitude without alienating his base, but I think he may be "un-electable" otherwise. How difficult will it be to link him to people like Pat Robertson (who can be counted on to make inflammatory statements in "support" of Santorum)?
His one hope is that if Hillary is his opponent, her choices (of running mate and how she runs her campaign) could provide him with just enough electoral votes to win. Especially if he gets a high turnout in his favor and liberal voters (especially younger ones) stay home in large enough numbers.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."
