They could have made it all up. That's why historians don't treat something from a single source as settled fact. They look for other sources that corroborate the claim. This is precisely what the story of Jesus lacks.

To get people to believe his story with insufficient evidence by promising a cookie for people who do (the cookie itself also to be believed in on insufficient evidence). That doesn't sound much like the supernatural claims of any other religion except all of them.

And the longer ago they were (and thus harder to verify) the greater they were. Creating the universe, creating life, creating humans, drowning the world, stopping the sun, causing plagues, raining mana, raising the dead, healing the sick, walking on water, appearing on toast...anyone else see a pattern here? Even if you grant the existence of God, he seems to be running out of steam.

Not many. Siddhartha, Mohammed (catching up even though Christians had an 800 year head-start), a few others. He had an impact, although the emperor Constantine seems to have had as much to do with that as Jesus did.

Jesus predicted that there would be a great turning away. That people would abandon sound doctrines and follow fables. That many will choose the broad road to destruction.

Humans over the centuries have believed many things that can be dismissed as nonsense. Spring heel Jack for instance. Why are their beliefs any less valid than yours?
The only valid process we've found to date to filter nonsense from reality is by examining the evidence.
The only evidence Christians have is a collection of doctored, 1st-3rd century propaganda mushed together with Jewish mythology. Hardly compelling.
And lastly, "many others" believing something has zero bearing on its truth. "Many others" are Muslims/Hindus/Mormons et al, and yet as a Christian, you think they are believing incorrectly. You see the flaw in that line of thinking?
Bare assertions will get you nowhere.
Not everything can be explained scientifically, especially when it comes to faith. I don't need empirical evidence that He existed when I know how he changed my life and many others.

I don't think it is pathetic that I believe what I believe. God took a dozen unknown guys and used them to turn the world upside down. Pretty amazing.
