To me that quote doesn't mean he's trying to tell gays how to dress, he's saying sometimes gay people dress in a way specifically to portray their sexuality and that he doesn't want anything to do with that because he sees it as unnecessary.
I think people have gone WAY overboard on this. I've seen articles with people who are saying he's being fiercely homophobic when he himself is openly attracted to men and people saying he's basically saying you can be gay just don't dress like a faggot.
Maybe I'm just being nieve but I don't see any difference between this and a straight person saying straight people don't have to love sports, never wear pink, drink beer and do things in order to say "I am definitely straight." Because you're still straight anyway.
He's not telling gay people what to do, he's just saying that when gay people dress in a way that is stereotypically gay he's not really into all that.
Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.
Impersonation is treason.
