I forget where it's stated, but I found that rather insulting. Of course this was back when I was a kid, and they glossed over a lot of the worst parts of the bible. But someone in the church noticed I wasn't giving my all to christ, so they mentioned that line, and I didn't react the way she expected.
She said if I was given a plate of grits, would I rather it hot or lukewarm. And I said if I was hungry, I'd appreciate just being given food. Especially if it was free. To throw it back at the other person because it's not warm enough would be very rude.
This didn't completely break my faith in christianity, but it certainly didn't get the result she was hoping for.
Funny you should mention glossing over, I don't think it's all glossed over, I think it's just we're encouraged to think about it differently. For example, it wasn't until I was in my mid-twenties that it dawned on me that Noah's Ark was about murdering all but 8 people on the planet. We're taught it's a story about salvation rather than condemnation even though it's so obvious if you're on the outside looking in.
Religions were invented to impress and dupe illiterate, superstitious stone-age peasants. So in this modern, enlightened age of information, what's your excuse? Or are you saying with all your advantages, you were still tricked as easily as those early humans?
