Not in this century.
I don't think we can afford to think like that, certainly the middle east is still stuck too much in the past, but humans did manage to ditch slavery and women can vote. I wouldn't be so quick to say the East cannot change. It may change at a slower pace, but Morocco and Turkey while they still have their own baggage, are not as far back as Iran or Saudi Arabia.
Nada stood up to Iran's leader, yes she died for it. Malala almost died standing up to dark age thinking. Ayaan Hirsi Ali managed to escape Islam. There are people in that part of the world that do want change.

They'll never change, is the fear the right wing sells. I certainly value challenging political Islam and any holy writing used as a weapon. But I do value my species ability to change as per the examples above. We can't abandon those who do want change because of the actions of others.
