Or because they may be emotionally vulnerable and were told of the "Good News" (Jesus saves), and because they had no other hope were willing to give it up for Jesus, even if it means admitting that they're sinners. In fact, for me, the "Good News" is what motivated me to "admit my sins" and become a "Jesus Christ follower" for a while. And as you can guess, I was emotionally vulnerable back then ... and scientifically ignorant as well (but that's another story).
