I think their greatest fears when it comes to their faith is science learning and studying the unknown. The more we know, the more facts we uncover. Facts that contradict religious belief. The other great fear of theirs is popularity. To have more and more people leave religion altogether means less members of their group to reassure each other that they're right about their beliefs. If you really want to believe in a lie, you're going to want as many people to believe it as possible.
