More like five states. The vast majority of states in the US do not actually state that it is illegal to own a fully automatic assault weapon. Or to operate one. Remember, the AR ban expired in '04 and hasn't been renewed. Yet. Purchasing is a different matter. For example: I own a fully-automatic 1949-manufactured AK-47 with a customized optics rail and a modified magazine well to allow for attaching a 100-round drum, among a couple other modifications. I can walk around with this thing in plain sight in over 40 states in the US, as long as I am in areas where guns are not prohibited.
I also have an Accuracy International AS-50. Yes, I have a .50 BMG-caliber anti-materiel rifle. Again, I can wander around with this thing in my hands, as long as I am not in gun-prohibited areas. I can walk past a police car, and as long as I show 'em my permit and registration, I can just scare the shit out of everyone within viewing distance if I so desire.
I don't, of course, because this would be retarded, and a supremely dick move at that. But I could. And so could everyone else who gets a hold of one legally.
Great thing is I got these guns legally. Class F permit, and the AS-50 was given to me by my brother, who has a military-acquisition-level permit, allowing him to buy any kind of gun he desires. I had to sign some paperwork to make the transfer legit, but...there it is.
So, yes, you might want to do a bit more reading on all these states you know of, cuz...apparently you...
Eh, fuck it, I have no real inclination to be snarky today.
Also; unless you meant at the federal level, where such guns tend to be restricted...unless, again, you have a permit.
I should point out that getting permits for such guns? It's NOT easy. At all. My former diagnosis of schizophrenia almost barred me from it, if it weren't for the fact I've been declared several times over in the past to not be a danger to society. [truth be told, schizophrenics rarely ever are dangers. Sociopaths, however...different matter entirely.] I've made damn sure to not give them an excuse to ever revoke my permits, too.
