I ended up with a bottle of Stag's Leap. Middle of the road in terms of $$
Very good, though. I said, it's Sunday why not? :-)
Perhaps. I don't know how well stocked US liqour stores are when it comes to European wines. I know the selection of US wines is often somewhat poor in Swedish stores. Mostly you have to to pre-order wines from smaller US wineries. Which sucks, because a lot of the US stuff you see on the shelf is mass produced bag-in-box bilge.
Perhaps this is regarded as a specialty wine; I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case. So try online!
It's going to vary regionally. It varies by state. Around here, "liquor stores" don't sell beer and wine - distilled spirits only. Some grocery stores carry a decent selection of wine - I know of one that has a few thousand varieties.
The typical store is going to have a lot of mass produced swill and perhaps some good stuff.
BTW, I have to echo your recommendation on German white wine - very fine stuff. I'm partial to German Riesling myself.
