One of the religious beliefs all societies have shared is the existence of "the soul." (I attribute this to the phenomenon of the so-called "out of body" experience; if people today experience OBEs, there's no reason why our ancestors didn't.) Some of our ancestors noted the cyclical nature of the world--seasons, day and night, plants die and are reborn, etc.--and they figured that if everything in the world recycles, then so must the soul recycle.
This is where belief in reincarnation came from. Isn't it silly?
