As I noted in a similar thread not so long ago, the Mormons spilled the play book on the prophecy scam.
* lie about what was prophesied
* lie about accuracy of fulfillment
* change the prophesy to match subsequent events
* create the prophecy after the event happens
* make prophecy vague
* claim a prophecy was made, then don't release the records
* admonish those questioning the claim
* excommunicate those admonished if they don't shut up already
* assert church poobahs would never lie about prophesy
* re-assert church poobahs would never lie about prophesy
* if really pressed on a prophesy fuck up, assert church guarantees pew warmers salvation despite unintentional church error
* ignore all the false prophesies
* ignore folks who question why if one prophesy came true there don't seem to be any others
* admonish those folks
* excommunicate those folks if they still won't shut up about it
* dodge the issue by pointing out all the false prophesies other religions have made
* advise those bothered by any prophesy problems that they aren't praying enough or are too evil or stupid to understand God's plan

The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.
