Well, since every story has at least two sides here's one side. The simple thing is to say that the four abused a vulnerable people who was betrayed by his friend. The more complex thing to think about is that the four actually sacrificed their own freedom and welfare by doing something against their own self-interests in order to help the guy financially. Before the incident the guy was poor and had no prospects of getting any money any time soon. So they attacked him and put it out for everyone to see and to become enraged about to the point where strangers sent the abused person their own hard-earned money that they could have spent on their own needs and obligations.
The net result is that the victim got money for working for it by being abused for a few hours and the perps will lose their freedom for making it possible.
At one time or another we've all said "I wish I had some money" without actually thinking about the consequences or how we would get it. It's like when cops shoot a person dead and the city pays out $millions to the survivors. They got the money that they had always dreamed about but it came with an unexpected price.
So send the victim some money. It will make you feel better.
