Out of curiosity from a photographer's perspective, a friend of mine and I worked it out. It's the eyes. If you can get the eyes right in a photograph, it's all over.
That sounds about right the eyes do a lot for us in a photograph. Here is one a friend took of her border collie whispering secrets into my aussie/heeler cross Heidi's ear. I like the intimacy.

Then I forgot to post this one of Heidi for Halloween. This is the difference in the way a blue eye and a brown eye reflect light at twilight .. and/or she really is possessed.
