Quote:It comes as no suprise to me that after the breathtaking rise of the turkish economy in the past ten years, nationalistic movements must have gained momentum. It actually has no real connection to the "economic rise" of Turkey. The nationalistic momentum began with the foundation of the Turkish government of Ankara during the war of independence, it's leader was our founder Atatürk.
It continued to exist throughout the years, but under different people and under different contexts and difering ideologies.
Quote:Honestly I would rather be drank under the table with a turkish matcho, than to be assaulted by an islamist lebanese imigrant.Indeed, but most lebs I've met in Germany were not that bad.
Quote:I rather have the feeling that the turks are integrating pritty well into our sociaty, and not just integrating but also becoming part of our culture.I believe the next generation will archive full integration, however this generation is somewhere in between...The previous generations are not integrated at all. Some do not even speak German at all.
Quote:If you like it or not, I have always seen the turks to be a european people or at least at the crossroads. Although you may originate from central asia, your people didn`t just rule over the middle east, but also over Rumenia, Greece, Bulgaria and the entire Balkans, and twice stood at the gates of Vienna.Well, Turks have been in contact with Europe for a long time indeed, not just with the Oghuzes, but the large influx of Huns, Bulgars, Apars and later on, Cumans and etc. however being "European" is somewhere something very different. Even if we try to hide it, we still maintain the "asiatic mindset" that most Europeans lack. We somewhat managed to force this on peoples like Greeks and Macedonians(Macedonians being probably the most Turk-friendly nation in the Balkans except for the pretentious Bosnians), and the rest of the Balkan folks, but still, we just cannot really become Europeans the way you are. Neither should we wish for such a thing, in my opinion. We should in all means, wish to be Turkish. That's what we are.
Quote:So your culturehas influenced us, not just since migrant workers came here in the 1960s and 1970s, but since the fall of the Byzantene Empire and the fall of Konstantinople.
[/quote]
Well, I think our contact goes even further back. To the time the Huns invaded Europe.
Quote:And on the other hand there is not just the turkish cultural influence in Europe through architecture, art and other, but in the one trip I took to Istanbul, I had the impression that it was a more tolerant and democratic sociaty than for example Rumenia.Friend, Istanbul is and was always the most cosmopolitan city in Turkey. You can see every kind of people in Istanbul. Therefore, tolerance is a staple there, however it's also home to most of the petty crime in Turkey.
Quote:Cem Özdemir is the head of the german green party and Mesut Özil is member of ther german national footballteam.Yes indeed, but I guess at some point in time, our immigrants in Germany will return home. At least this is my wish. Even though we might have a few prominent Turks in Germany, wir sind immer noch "Gastarbeiter", and well, there is only a certain place to which we can rise over there. We're not a really historic community in Germany, and our influence will always be limited, and so will the life standards that we will have over there, even if we are fully integrated.
So it's better that we ought to return to Turkey after a while, as I think that ethnic tensions will see a rise in Europe in the future, it's best to leave things as they are. Sheep dwell in their pens, Falcons live in their nests, bears rest in their lairs, and so must people live amongst their own, on their own lands.
Quote:When it comes to "matcho-culture", since you have been to school in germany you must know that our unis are filled with young german women seeking a higher education.Same for Turkey. But I was talking about the Turks in Germany specifically. They dress and act very differently than the Turks in Turkey, which I attribute to the culture shock. I too went through a mild culture shock when I went to Germany. But overall, it was a nice experience in my opinion, and on the top of that, I learned the German language which is probably the best thing I got out of it.
