Does Atheism make sense?

This is all I need to read to realize that you're a crazy fundie. In fact, I think I'm going to use it as my sig line for a while.

In the bible, slaves were also taken as spoils of war. I don't see how this would be considered selling yourself into slavery to repay a debt. And if biblical slavery were so good, why did the Israelites leave Egypt en masse ? Shouldn't they be sued for breach of contract, since they all apparently sold themselves into slavery?

But Thomas now you're just talking sanity. He won't understand that.

"I'm arguing slavery in the Bible is okay"

The only thing that could possibly excuse that is if you followed with:
"I'm arguing slavery in the Bible is okay. All the Christian slave-owners were killed when their slaves revolted, and I think it was a morally correct way to punish them."

Literally NOTHING else you could say would make the slavery in the Bible okay.

That isn't slavery... That is called getting a job.

Thank you. Finally, somebody understands. We are all tax slaves. "Slave" is an objective term that changes. The modern translations of the bible often use the word "slave." Don't look at the word by your definition; look at the word through various biblical passages. Doing this you will find that servitude (or "slavery") in the bible isn't modern slavery at all; but as frankiej put it, a "job."

Our definitions of slave are clearly different then, but I remember a certain passage about a slave being raped to death, cut into small pieces, and mailed to all corners of the land at the whim of the faithful...
I'm guessing she didn't sign up for that, or do anything to deserve it.

Bullshit. You have a choice to leave this country, or hole up in the woods somewhere writing manifestos. Care to show me the passage in scriptures that clearly lays out a slaves right to quit their "job"? No? The only people interested in changing the definition of slavery are apologists and bigots, which is quite frankly redundant. How about you reach down, grab a pair, and say "Yeah, slavery is okay because it's clearly layed out in the text, and the text is the word of god". No, you have to be a pansy about it, likely the result of all of that secular culture you absorbed and used to form your own personal "christian" myth. You don't agree with slavery, and so the bible couldn't possibly agree with slavery. God likes whatever you like, agrees with whatever you agree with. Clap

I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Or he could at least grow a pair and say, "Yes, the bible was OK with slavery but I think it's as reprehensible now as it was back then, so the bible is wrong on this point." I'd have just a bit of respect for him if he said this. No, he's got to go the "Well, slavery was different back then" cop out. It's a blatant lie that Christians came up with to sooth the cognitive dissonance they feel when learning the bible didn't condemn slavery.

God is a perfect Creaure. Modern slavery is immoral. God supports slavery... Hmmm... two of those statements seem to contradict. Therefore; something must give. You cannot read 3000 year old text through the eyes of a modern culture; surely you must realize this? You must read it through the eyes of the culture that it was written for. I have given you scripture that shows that slaves get at least one mandatory day off, are sold (or sell themselves) into slavery as a means of survival, they aren't allowed to be forcibly taken into slavery, they shouldn't ever be killed over refusing to work, if they are blinded or harmed irreversibly as a result of a beating their contract is broken and are to be set free, and that they were to be no more than lightly punished for unwittingly making a mistake. Does that sound like your slavery? You laugh that this has turned into an argument of definitions; when really that is the most important aspect.

Yes.

Ancient slavery was an abomination as well. It's not a job if you're not allowed to quit. It's not a job if your boss is free to assault you. The word for a situation like that is: slavery. That's what the Bible describes.
