The kids don't get to have a say if you send them to secular school. Parents have a right to educate their children as they see fit.

A public school is a secular school. It's a school run by the government that does not teach religion.

Of course I think children should go to good public schools. That does not mean I think that the government should dictate whether a parent sends their child to a religious or a public school.

I am not siding with anyone but as someone who was raised in a Catholic primary school I have to say that I think it would be better to leave religion out of education. Schools, in my opinion, should not have any religious leanings.
If the parents feel they must impart their religious teachings then a church or a mosque is the best place to do it, isn't it?

Of course. However, that is not the point. Is it up to those of us who feel that way to dictate what is taught in private schools? Should we allow the government to ban such schools, despite the fact that we want separation of church and state?

In my experience, a lot of atheists who claim to be "secularists" only want religion to stay out of government, and are perfectly fine with government regulating religion. That isn't what "separation" means in "separation of church and state".
