An atheist victory?
#11
RE: An atheist victory?
I've seen abandoned churches before, but I find abandoned buildings of any kind depressing, so I don't really see that as a victory.

My town is not shrinking, though. There seems to be constant development of houses and plazas cutting into more and more of the green space (it is actually one of the major problems here). So this could mean there are less religious people now.
"Sisters, you know only the north; I have traveled in the south lands. There are churches there, believe me, that cut their children too, as the people of Bolvangar did--not in the same way, but just as horribly. They cut their sexual organs, yes, both boys and girls; they cut them with knives so that they shan't feel. That is what the Church does, and every church is the same: control, destroy, obliterate every good feeling. So if a war comes, and the Church is on one side of it, we must be on the other, no matter what strange allies we find ourselves bound to."

Here too. My favourite is 'St Pauls' a nice old former Anglican pile which is now a night club. It is now called 'Heaven' and is perhaps the most notorious nightspot in the city

It's common in Australia to turn little old country churches into quite nice homes. Have never heard of one becoming a brothel. I guess even in Oz that might be pushing the envelope.

Quote:INFAMOUS Adelaide nightclub Heaven's anticipated reopening this week at a new city location has hit a snag after an 11th-hour licensing intervention order by SA Police.

The Sunday Mail understands police have concerns the new club has too many ties to the old Heaven management, in particular former operator John Pike, who is banned from running licensed premises because of his links to outlaw bikie clubs.

I'm in North Carolina. They don't let stuff sit empty if they can help it.

One of my favorite bookstores is in an old church building. I bought one of Victor Stengers' books there.

I always figured that would be the last place polls would be because of the "separation of church and state" thing, but I guess not. Then, last year, the year right before I would be able to vote, I finally asked my dad why our polling place was a church, and I found out that the church was actually no longer a church. Yes, as it turned out, the church closed down, and had been converted into a community center! I was surprised, as this had never happened before, as far as I was aware! Because of that, I felt a mild sense of satisfaction. I don't know, should it be regarded as a victory for atheism to have a Christian church converted into a secular community center, or is it just no big deal?

In my area when a church building has been converted (excuse the pun) into a community center it means that the church outgrew the building and had to move.
I have studied the Bible and the theology behind Christianity for many years. I have been to many churches. I have walked the depth and the breadth of the religion and, as a result of this, I have a lot of bullshit to scrape off the bottom of my shoes. ~Ziploc Surprise

I'd love to see one made into a Cat House.

Call it - Mary Magdalene's House of Pussy just to keep the biblical theme.

Being in the bible belt, one church shuts down and 3 more comes to life.
