WTF Atheists!?

Who is denying the term is used? You miss our point in that allowing the magic of words to rule you is stupid. If they want to call themselves hipsters and or others want to use it as a slur to distance themselves from "hipsters" I don't give a shit. It still doesn't change that virgin births arnt real.

Any word that is used to label onself or label others can be used as both a postive thing and or a pejoritive.

"Gay" has more than one definition. Originally it ment happy. Then homophobes used it to demonize "gays", but somehow gays got through it and beyond it and STILL use the word "gay".

Thats why while words are important, I don't treat them like they have magical powers over me.

I'm sure, in fact I know, I've posted this before, but the etymology of the word gay is, like most words, a fascinating one. The origin of the word in the sense of homosexual is older than you'd think, derived from 'gay' in the sense (I apologise) of promiscuity which is far older even than that.

I like your phrasing of being ruled by the magic of words. Divorce them from whatever intent may be behind their use and the words themselves are nothing but symbols. Wonderfully evocative symbols, but nothing more. Nobody has ever drowned in the word 'lake', skated on the word 'ice' or been shot by the word 'gun'.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

You are being ignorant of the context that the OP is using. He's using a later, internet-contrived version of the word, "hipster". It's slang, and the entry I gave you is exactly the one the OP is using.

Stop arguing about it. The OP said what he means. He is referring to people who are atheists, in order to be trendy and edgy. That is what he means by 'hipster'. It doesn't matter that the source is Urban Dictionary, because it represents what the OP means all the same.

Thank you for clarifying my clarification, or rather expansion, since like you I wasn't strictly addressing your post so much as developing upon it. Still, every little helps Smile. Watch as I do it again:

Speaking only for myself, of course, I concur with others who consider me intelligent, not because I don't believe in religion (is religion something one can believe in anyway?) but because what I am in the habit of calling my intellect is not shackled by religious ideology; my capacity for learning and self-correction is not hamstrung at the starting gate by the desperate need to conform to dodgy dogma.
Well theists can be intellegent too, so solely basing it on intellegence is not a good measure either. Otherise I would have fallen for the same "Aquinus knew about quantim physics, because he was a smart man". I actually heard that from a guy who was arguing for his cristianity and all he came up with was an ambiguos sentence you could retrofit after the fact.

And even between scientists they should want that scrutiny and ethics of others kicking their tires because even with intellegence scientist are not the tool, they are a human using the tool, so it always helps when others check the work of those "intellegent" people.

It isn't some appeal to authority, it is conformation of fact along with someone making that claim, even IF they are the authority on that particular subject. You still need the police policing the police otherwise you can set up a psudoscientist to sell snake oil, and or get stuck dwelling on Alechemy which Newton did for a while.

Independent fact checking insures better accuracy of data, always and even with intellegent scientists. And the ethical ones who do believe in a god STILL seperate what they believe with what they do in a lab.

Hitchens for example was no evolutionary biologist himself, but that does not mean he shouldn't have any right to comment on evolution. I couldnt comment on every detail of it, but I do know the simple atoms that make up DNA which science has proven consistantly over and over as matching up with Darwins theory.

So for those who may not know, Adinine, Guanine, Thymine and Cytosine(sp) DNA.

So even a layperson like me knows the truth of evolution without knowing every aspect of it. Just like you can drive a car without having to know how to build one, to know that it does not run on pixy dust.

While I have no problem with the statement people should get an education, the simple fact is none of us can be experts on every issue on every subject. Not even a neurosurgon is going to know everything a dentist would know or vice versa.

Ultimately when someone says "what would you know, you don't have a degree" I hate that insidious argument. No I don't(in that feild, I do have a BA) but that does not mean I advocate keeping people stupid nor does it mean if I tell the truth that means it isn't true because I am a layman on one subject.

I think you all should go read my post on page 1, in which I put a nice quote about 'hipsters' and the people who use the term/think they exist.

I think you are seriously mistaken, I only try to be true to myself I don't shoot for clever or entertaining. I can be rather blunt and stubborn at times.

First of all, no, i'm not English, so me explaining this on this site was probbably the worst idea. Some of you seem quite upset by what i've said and no, i'm not going to kill myself. To bad ay..
Anyway, some of you have actually proved my point by reacting the way you did.
It's as soon as people post something like this, you're all over it. And you're telling me not to stress. The only thing I wanted to clear was, if you want silly things like religion to go away is to stop going on about it.

And for the record, I wasn;t going on about this forum, you should see the sites that are out there posing as Atheist sites, while really, their just stirring shit and looking for silly agruments. I was just trying to point that out, but failed.

And YES, scenepoints were actually used on one of those sites. I believ it was a French site. You should check some of em out. It's rediculous and I feel a shamed for some of em.

Anyway, thanks for raging! haha

I think I love you.

These types of people also expect all atheists to ascribe to certain ethics and political opinions, because they need company for their circle jerking.

Hipsters have ruined metal music, too. They ruin everything they touch, because they are essentially looking for affirmation and attention over contribution.

Thats what I meant! I should'nt rage in English since it isn't my first language. So I ripped myself a new a**hole when I started this thread. But what you're sayying here is exactly what I meant. I don't even hang around with these scene kids, but thei're still meddling with everything. Thei're like that king, but everything they touch turns to shit.

RE: WTF Atheists!?
This sounds suspiciously like that old Christian argument "your atheism is only a phase."

"You're only atheist to sound cool"

What exactly does being an atheist stand for? I'd rather someone judge me for being a humanist, not an atheist. I don't give a fuck why they think I'm an atheist, really, because it doesn't change the fact that I haven't thought there was a god since I was 10. I doubt those "hipsters" you keep mentioning give a fuck what you think about why they label themselves atheists either. One can't help what one believes, and if one labels oneself an atheist online it really doesn't make them look any smarter or cooler than another type of person, as a few people on this forum who are both atheist and complete twats demonstrate.

If it's so trendy, I doubt Dave Silverman, who I had the intense pleasure of meeting and spending an evening with, would be working so tirelessly to get us the respect and rights we deserve.

If no one knows what it means anymore, I doubt we'd see so much activism in the blogosphere. Quit hanging in trollish areas - one look at youtube ought to let you know that people on the net will say just about anything from the safety of their keyboard. Go find somewhere to surf that focuses on the positive instead.

Unless you'd rather just bitch that no one understands what it means anymore like an old man proclaiming kids have it too good these days.

And then there are those who sit quietly in a corner and see the trolls go by... At first, I thought you were the troll.... then people bashed and you refrained from replying for too long... then I was sure you were trolling.

"Trendy to be Atheist"?
I can't say there aren't people doing that... There are too many people in the world, and quite a few follow trends, no matter what.
But you can't expect to claim that all atheists are just being trendy... heck, not even most! Some may be. Most atheists are atheists because they don't believe in the existence of gods, period.

No I wasn´t trolling. I know most Atheist on this forum are not trying to be trendy. Although the are a few that like to bash. I was just trying to point out that being an Atheist is losing it´s power because of people like the ones that don´t care what it stands for, but just think it´s a cool thing to be.

RE: WTF Atheists!?
If atheism is a trend, it is the longest lasting trend that has ever existed.
Since Socrates questioned the gods in 400 b.c.
A thoughtprocess to be defined as a trend seems to me to be a bit far fetched.
When you accuse people of being "fake atheists" this reminds me of marxist group I use to hang arround with who accused newcommers to be "fake" commies.
Only because you have been an atheist for a longer period of time than others, this doesn`t give you the right to be judgemental over other atheists convictions.

Posing like an atheist? I think this would only be possible in a sociaty in which being religious could end you up in a state of discrimination - such as communist Albania or North Korea.
I guess there are more people out there who pose as religious to not lose their head in a nation like Iran, Iraq, Oman, UAE, Yemen or Saudi Arabia.
