"How do you actually know you're real?"
#31
RE: "How do you actually know you're real?"
In my dreams I have sex with beautiful women and achieve my childhood ambitions.

In reality I have panic attacks and rarely go outside.

That's how I know what is real.

I heard someone the other day say that they hate the evil characters in fiction, they always route for the good ones.

To be honest I would rather that the evil ones always won in fiction, so long as in reality and in the newspapers also therefore, there was nothing but positive truth. I would much prefer it that way round than the way we really have it: "Happily ever after" fictional stories where the heroes always win and yet almost nothing but horribleness in the news, newspapers, etc, and in real life. Boo!

Oh well, I'm happy. I have to be Big Grin

Shit I wish my dreams were like that. My dreams are either completely surreal or horror stories that are completely lucid so I am not even remotely disturbed because I believe that it's just a dream, I wake up to find out that I was right. This happens over and over.

I have stabbed a few people in dreams in war-like situations or running from police. But I wake up and feel like I have just watched the best action/thriller movie. Literally waking up full of adrenaline and checking that the city hasn't exploded and I haven't killed anyone in my house.

I don't sleep often, but when I do it is a good ride. So yeah, reality is always that ride that isn't quite as good as my imagination.

In my experience it's really like this: Wake up from a so-called "bad" dream= Ultimately start off my entire day with a feeling of pleasant relief. Whereas: Wake up from a so-called "good" dream= Ultimately start off my entire day with a feeling of unpleasant disappointment.

The problem is that I rarely remember my dreams and when I do they are usually the so-called "bad" kind that I wake up to feeling relief to start my day with and, since people dream every night whether they remember them or not, this does make me wonder that the majority of the time, which is when I don't remember my dreams, I may very well have had positive dreams which would perhaps...perhaps... - explain why I am frequently so demotivated and lethargic when I wake up: Maybe I am so disappointed that real life isn't as good as my dream that I feel contempt for my dream and block the entire dream out from my memory? Maybe that's where all my so-called "good" dreams are that make me wake up feeling disappointed.

Now, this post, I reckon, is probably "overthinking". However, it's still an idea and it's still something to think about. "Food for thought", or whatever. Hopefully not totally useless.

Also, if it is totally useless, let's just call it "art".

Furthermore, I'd personally choose "overthinking" over "underthinking" at least most of the time. Hopefully I am getting the balance right though Smile

I know I exist because I seem to be experiencing existence as a subjective state and I wouldn't know I wasn't if I wasn't. Unlike say a rock which exists but doesn't experience itself it just exists as part of what I and other people are experiencing because we will agree that the rock is there.

I can't pin down what exactly about it annoys me but it itches at my common sense. It's one of those things I can't rationally debunk because honestly, someone who says that the use of the five available senses is something not to be trusted...might as well believe whatever the fuck they want to believe.

Anybody else have to deal with this shit? And if so, how do you guys deal with it?

Punch them in the face and stamp on their throat.

The victim normally concludes that we are both real.
You are currently experiencing a lucky and very brief window of awareness, sandwiched in between two periods of timeless and utter nothingness. So why not make the most of it, and stop wasting your life away trying to convince other people that there is something else? The reality is obvious.

@OP

I don't. However, assuming that I don't exist does not allow me to reach useful answers to questions about reality. Since assuming that I do exist allows me to do the same, and is supported by my personal experiences, it seems a reasonable assumption.

I found this video though provoking although take with a pitch of salt and nothings Proven in it yet.

"Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful" - Edward Gibbon (Offen misattributed to Lucius Annaeus Seneca or Seneca the Younger) (Thanks to apophenia for the correction)
'I am driven by two main philosophies:
Know more about the world than I knew yesterday and lessen the suffering of others. You'd be surprised how far that gets you' - Neil deGrasse Tyson
"Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on or by imbeciles who really mean it." - Mark Twain

Yea I hate his crap too.

How do you know the earth is not flat? How do you know there isn't an invisible teapot orbiting Jupiter. How do you know I am not getting a blowjob right now from Angelina Jolie?

How do we know idiots like this exist, because the brain hurt of reading crap is real.
