combat sports

What do you guys think about combat sports?
I love watching them and I love keeping fit but I don't know if I can actually be bothered joining a combat sports club of any kind.
Mainly due to
1 the cost
2 the fact I might injure myself and come away less fit than before I joined.
3 You really need a practice partner to get good at these kind of sports and I don't know anyone else who is into this sort of thing and the classes are only 1 hour long twice a week, its hardly intense training. When I go to the gym it's open 24 hours a day 7 days a week, in the past I've spent all night in the gym before taking little breaks inbetween, this is the kind of training I like doing.
I joined a jui jitsu class tonight and it was ok but I came away with a bit of a sore back and this was only the first beginner lesson, my sore back will go in no time but I'm still beginning to think I might just be better off sticking with going to the gym and pushing it to the limit there.
Is anyone else on here into any of this sort of thing? Boxing, MMA and so on?
Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.
Impersonation is treason.

I've been interested in a lot of combat sports; but I've never been able to take part in any.

I watch a number of them, NFL football mostly. I played sandlot sports when I was younger. I learned that I enjoy watching other people voluntarily pound each other into multiple concussions far more than experiencing it myself.

Before I started rock climbing I used to box. It's great. An intense and addictive way to get fit. Jujitsu is great too. Not only is it a great way to be in shape, but it's very practical for self defense. I also think the community around them are great in my experience. There are sports with a lot of assholes out there, but I think combat sports tend to have cool people. Maybe because of how serious they are compared to something like Squash.

Fencing! It's a great workout, kind of like interval training (work your ass off for a bit, take a breather, then back to getting your heart rate up). There's the camaraderie of a team sport, but when you fence a bout, you're on your own.
Can be tough on the knees, especially épée, where your knees are part of the target area and you get stabbed in them. But both foil and saber fencing don't have knees as target. Can also be tough on the wrist, much like tennis. But it's great fun, and a good way of working out any anger one may have. It also tends to be pricey if you get into it (equipment isn't cheap), but most fencing clubs don't require you to have your own gear when you're starting out. Though a communal mask can be icky.

I've always wanted to try fencing. I fear I would present too large a target these days.

Then I'd suggest saber. It's derived from calvary sword fighting. It's mainly slashing at your opponent's head. Sabers have a larger curved bell-guard used as a shield of sorts. Block the other guy's blade and you're golden. It's really fun!

And if you don't block it, boy is your face red!

Meh, you wear a wire mesh helmet. Sometimes the ringing can get loud, but you don't feel any pain with a headshot.
