Where do you come from?
RE: Where do you come from?
Abaris, my husband's mother was born in Vienna, Austria in 1939. When my husband was a toddler, he spoke German to his mother and grandmother. Unfortunately he has forgotten how to speak the language but when he hears German he can still pick out several words or phrases.

Did they have to flee?

My parents and grandparents emigrated to Hungary when Hitler came. My parents met there and got married in 1945. They briefly considered moving to the states when all was over. I'm glad they didn't, since my older brother would have been the right age for Vietnam. Still, I've got an elderly aunt living in America. No longer in the USA, since after she retired, she moved to Canada because of the social system.

His grandparents sent their ten year old daughter to the UK and fled with their infant daughter, my future MIL. Luckily, they had a sponsor in the US.

I think that my husband's aunt was part of the kindertransport

I'll bet you used either a shovel or a clam gun.

You don't know real digging of clams until you're doing it all by hand. It's much more fun Smile Especially with the element of danger... they aren't called 'Razor Clams' for nothing.

England merry? Some parts are. In certain places people are very friendly and helpful. In others, they stare at me like I'm the cause of all their problems and refuse to even answer a simple hello.

It's generally a laid back place, as long as there aren't severely drunk people around. We get big gangs of really drunk, incredibly loud, obnoxious and violent louts who go out specifically to cause trouble and/or fights.

Actually, we did most of the digging by hand. Three men, one shovel. Almost sounds like the title of a snuff porn flick.

You're always welcome to do it again someday. But leave the crutch behind, it cluttered up the last film, and we got us an epic sequel coming:

Thirty Clams in a Bucket. Digg it, man.

RE: Where do you come from?
I like this travelogue approach to where we're from and where we've been. I'll see what I can put together.

A navy brat frequently based in San Diego. That city has changed a lot since I grew up there. My parents would take us to the zoo, to Balboa park and to the beach. Good times. (These three are my own fairly recent pics. Most of the rest are pilfered from flickr.)

But earlier on spent time in Guam and Hawaii.

Spent part of middle school and some high school years in Maryland, just outside of D.C. Our backyard backed up on very green woods where I hiked all the time, coming home with black rat snakes and box turtles.

Now I live in Berkeley where I hope to die, but not any time soon.

And this is the one where you might be able to find my old dog Fletcher.
