Christian Drivel From Dear Mom

Christian Drivel From Dear Mom
So I was talking to my Southern Baptist mother on the phone last night and she was talking about an older gentleman from my old home town who passed away from a stroke recently.

She proceeded to tell me how he made it pretty big in life with lots of money but word was that he was an... "atheist!" *gasp*

My mom then proceeded to say, "I bet he wishes he had some money to buy his way out of where he is now!"

Of course I just bite my tongue as usual. Fuck, I'm tired of hearing such idiotic statements come out of the mouth of such a highly intelligent woman.

*sighs*

I'm sorry you have to put up with a mother like that. Sad

Well, I would find it concerning if someone died as an Atheist...but that doesn't mean your mum isn't a bitch.

Why'd you hold your tongue? When people push their beliefs on you, it's okay to push back, regardless of whether they're your mother or not. I mean, you don't have to be mean about it or anything. Just say something like, "Considering his brain doesn't function anymore, mom, he can't wish for anything."
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

I am planning on having a death bed conversion to Hinduism.

Thanks for your concern, ideologue08.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

That was a really cruel thing for her to say. I don't think it would be disrespectful for you to tell her so.

Why not just convert to every religion in sequence, one after the other until you finally do die? Kind of a Russian roulette for the afterlife.

Hell, it'd be possibly the only completely honest answer to the question posed by Pascal's Wager! Completely random faith switching is the only way to even your odds across all afterlives, after all. Tongue
