Failing at Uni

RE: Failing at Uni
A friend of mine is an engineer. He and most of his siblings tested at genius level smarts. His kids are no slouches either. When he was in school, he was shy and nerdy, and to help himself combat that he learned how to be funny. He's hysterical - whip smart, whip fast with the jokes, keen insight, and stellar memory. Basically the things we enjoyed out of Carlin and still enjoy out of Lewis Black. He LOVES making people laugh, and he's a great writer in that respect. But his dad told him to be an engineer, because "that's where the money is."

So now he's got a great house and can provide amply for his kids, but spends all his non-family and non-work time (probably a good bit of work time) writing for various sites.

He said if he could do it all over, he'd have pursued some sort of comedic career - whether stand up, or writing like Dave Barry, he doesn't know - and since he can't do it all over, the best he can do is make sure all that money goes into giving his kid all the choices possible to do something he loves instead of "what makes the most money."

If I had the balls, I'd give up my car and go work for a green house. It'd halve my salary. I don't have the balls...and I'm part of a team that depends on that current salary now. So I keep searching for that elusive job that won't leave me stranded financially but will let me get into green stuff, because I hate accounting.

Although I don't think I'd have done much better at college age - I didn't even realize how much I loved plants until around the time I'd have been ending college. [shrugs]

It's a viable option. My boyfriend is getting tired of dealing with the company he's at, but can't afford to open his own photography studio yet. So he's thinking of joining the Navy so he can go back to school for IT, which he also loves, and open his own studio later.

His profile says he's in the UK. In the UK, degrees don't work like that at all. Most (if not all) classes you take are related to the main degree.

Obviously there is some variation. For instance, I took computer science, but there were classes that were heavily maths based, then some practical ones involving robotics, etc, but never anything involving English writing, or history, for instance.

@Gooders1002: What course are you taking? If there are similar courses you might be able to switch and do a bit of catch-up. Usually the university has councilors and advisors you can go to see about your options if you are struggling. The university never wants to see a student fail, so they are going to try and help get you on the right path.

I am doing business and Entrapaneurship and there is no similar course to it. Also its not what I though it would be. And TBH I hate and I might go and see the support again as I don't think this is the right path for me. Money is not an issue as long at it pays the bills I rather work in a job that made me happy then one that made me rich.

I recommend dropping out. There's nothing you can learn in school that you can't learn at a library for free.

Do you have an idea of what you'd like to do? if your choice of career is just as stable, financially speaking, then the following doesn't really apply.

About money: have you considered what sort of life would make you happy? are you going to be someone whose life revolves around his career and loves it? or do you want to spend lots of time travelling, shopping, owning cool cars and such? basically, would you be happier with a life that's focused on achieving something through your career, or would you be happier with using money to enjoy life?

Just saying, cos i used to think money isn't an issue for me, until i realized i have rather expensive goals. Also a friend told me that a career doesn't have to be all that your life is about, but it is a huge chunk of it.
