Which job? Advice sought

Which job? Advice sought
Hey again, most helpful forum! I greatly appreciate the contributions of polite and intelligent members here, thank you Smile

Okay so, I am currently looking for gainful employment and I got a call for a second interview (I did good on my first interview apparently) at a very nice office which I thoroughly enjoyed and could definitely see myself working at happily. The salary is approximately $27,000 which is pretty low, not ideal, but my best friend and I are planning on getting a place together as roommates to save money so it would be doable.

But at the same time I was offered an interview at a car dealership to be a used car salesman, at a very reputable dealership... I've never sold cars before but I was told by a friend who was in the business for 15 years that they never made less than $40,000 even in their first year.

I believe the smart thing is to accept whichever job is offered to me first.

Anyone care to chime in?

Decisions, decisions...

A few more things needed.

What about benefits? Health insurance, 401K options, paid days off, etc.

Also, do you see yourself as a salesman? Would you be happy pressuring people into car sales?

Won't either interfere with your scholarly pursuits?

Meh. Successful car sales requires an understanding of psychology and a willingness to manipulate people. If you can justify that, there is money to be made. Remember, it's not a car you're selling, but yourself.

Both jobs offer full benefits package... days off are ok with me...

I could see myself selling because I have a good charisma, people like me, it isn't a sleezey dealership that pressures people, it's one of those honest type of places from my understanding, my friend's husband works there for many years and is a very nice guy.

You make me laugh like BMO from Adventure Time.

He he Smile

It won't interfere with my academics because I HAVE to work full time... I'm 25 on my own, I can't afford bills and life if I'm not employed full-time.

So I'm taking online courses (bleh), I wish I could go to classes all day and focus on studies fully but I simply can't.

I am not a good salesman, that being said, I would not go for the car sales. I agree that some manipulation is involved and if I understand most sales positions, the money you make is based on commission. So, it is not really a guaranteed salary, unless you make the sales.

So, the question you need to ask yourself is, am I a good salesperson?

Also, I would consider the impact these jobs would have on your scholarly pursuits. While I was in college, especially grad school, I stuck with part time jobs. Starbucks has a great benefits package for working part time, not sure if they still offer it though.

Just food for thought. Also, try to get into a business that would help your college major. It appeared last time that you were still deciding on that, but once you decided on your major, I would really recommend getting a career in that field. There are many internships to be had.

Good luck.

Then take the lower paying job if they offer first. Then ditch them if you get the car dealership job.

It's all about the benjamins.

Thank you sarcasticgeographer, much obliged to your advice once again.

I'm 95% keen on majoring in Finance, I don't think I would enjoy accountancy and I don't want to program (computer science ruled out)...

But I don't have the luxury of working part-time or having an internship, unless it paid really well lol...

I'll have to try to get a job like that casually as I earn good money, if a job in finance pops up which pays really well then I could replace my current role with it but until then I'm not waiting around for it or trying too hard.

Do you have experience as a car salesman or you're just basing this off of what my friend said about $40k potentially?

Hell, if I KNEW I would make $40k+ then it is a no-brainer for me, but it is too uncertain which is why I'm hesitant.

I do believe I could be great at sales, but that is only a presumption which could be entirely wrong.

You never know your abilities in anything until you try. You could suck at it, you could be great at it... the only way to know is to try. Most likely you'll do fine. In most fields, most people aren't either wizards or idiots- they just do a decent job. And that's OK.

Yeah I agree bro.

My concern is... If I were to take this mediocre wage job, and then replace it with the sales... would I make more in sales.

Facepalm I hate decisions, as you may have noticed from my academic studies thread lol!

I am too analytic, and without sufficient data, how can my analysis be sufficient?
