I'm just not sure

I think you're over thinking and complicating the process. Becoming an atheist shouldn't be something you consciously take steps towards. Belief(whatever the position) should be something that comes naturally after weighing the evidence. If you don't believe in god, you don't believe in god, and worrying about whether you are an atheist or what you should do to become one is trivial and pointless.

And don't worry about being smote by god. He either doesn't exist, or is completely impotent.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

The only way to be "sure" is to experience God for yourself don't merely rely on what other people tell you search out God for yourself through prayer.

You do understand that most atheists on
this forum are former christisns, right?
We've been there and done that and we
have each witness the subjective evidence
you spoke of in another post. Humans can
talk themselves into believing almost anything.

They may have had a religious ideology that they lost and swapped for a different ideology.

Yes, I'm sure your version of Jesus™ is
waaaay more powerful than any of ours were.
Congratulations. Good luck with that.

Atheism has no ideology. You need to stop telling people here what they think.

Titles are overrated. Just be you. There are quite a few very successful self-titled atheists exposing the lies of organized religion. Why would this non-existent god punish you over them? Those worries are seeded from guilt insulted by the church.

If you're afraid of God punishing you, just drive an iron chariot. He seems to have trouble with them.
Christian apologetics is the art of rolling a dog turd in sugar and selling it as a donut.

RE: I'm just not sure
Hi Hello and welcome to AF! ^_^
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura

Probably somewhat less powerful as I don't believe in a literal Trinity. But he is the manifestation of the word of God within real human history regardless. Certainly God exists that's the crucial point atheists are getting wrong by making wide ranging assumptions based on very little evidence. Ok so we know that the Earth is 4 billion years old and the universe is just under 14 billion years old and there is evolution and all the rest of it but none of this disproves the existence of God.
Come all ye faithful joyful and triumphant.
