Hugs from the girl who traded barbies for hotwheels and micro machines.

It's like background noise; you won't notice its presence until its gone.

Imagine waking up one morning to find you've suddenly developed girly bits, or some strange third gender that you've never seen before. You'd definitely know something wasn't right then. Tongue

That would definitely be disconcerting, I admit.

I just don't know if it really is something that exists and I don't recognize, or if I just have a certain way of looking at things that is incompatible with the state of mind that does see gender as an identity factor. I'm loathe to make the comparison, but it strikes me as similar to people who consider their skin color to be a primary facet of their identity. I have white skin, but I think of that as just one of my physical traits.

That would, of course, raise the age-old question of nature vs. nurture. I am by no means willing to come down on either side of that argument, but that doesn't really matter. If someone else says that they feel a conflict between their gender and their biology, it is not my place to say that they don't just because I don't, you know? It's like the 'choice' issue for homosexuality, a non-starter for me. A person's sexual orientation would not be invalid to me even if it was a choice they made.

Hugs to both of you from the girl who desperately wanted to be a boy!

(Now, I'm glad I'm a girl- it's just that when I was younger, I thought something was wrong with me for liking girls, and I thought it would be easier if I had been born a boy)
