Hello All!

RE: Hello All!
It can if you let it for sure. My defining moment that made me realize that I had entered back into a delusional existence was last week when my 10 year daughter came home to tell me that they were passing out bibles at her public middle school. Still calculating my next move on that one.

Not funny... who's passing them out? I'm not sure about the law, but for teachers it would be transparently illegal, so it's a christian student group I guess? In that case I don't know if there's anything you can do.

I am still trying to figure that out. There were tables set up throughout school; in the hallways, cafeteria, and outside. There were a group of elderly people sitting at the tables - this is the info Ocean (my daughter) gave me. As the kids were walking inside/around school these elderly people were stopping the kids and giving the bibles to them. I am awaiting a return phone call from the superintendent. I agree, not funny at all; offensive and infuriating frankly.
As Ocean was walking into her GT class, a woman stopped her and stuck her hand out. Ocean says "whats this?", "a bible" she replied. Ocean said "this isn't church" and walked around the woman and into class. And while I am proud of her response - it is still BS.

I just recently moved back to the south right smack in the middle of the Bible belt and decided this would be the time to join a forum like this. I find it difficult to deal with the highly religious in my town and need a place that I can go to visit reality. Glad to find like-minded individuals.

Welcome.

This is why the more active free thought groups tend to form in the most active religious environments, a Newtonian truism at work. Or, as princess Leia once said, "the more you tighten your grip, the more entire star systems will slip through your fingers."

You have a very wise daughter who sounds like she can handle herself in this new environment.

You might find this useful, AmM. In looking it up I also spotted where the ACLU is already working on this in Kentucky....(of course.)

Now if only more kids were as brave and smart as your daughter.

Oh yeah and welcome!

RE: Hello All!
Those are the Gideons. They did that when I was going through school as a kid too. I still have a couple Gideon bibles floating around here and there.

Quote:Every school year, the Freedom From Religion Foundation receives countless complaints from parents about The Gideon Society or other similar groups who are distributing bibles to their children at public schools.

The Gideons, in particular, focus their efforts on proselytizing school children through bible distribution. It is unfortunate that this group, among other evangelizing groups, view schools as ripe territory for recruitment. These organizations take advantage of truancy laws and the captive audience of school children to proselytize young students.
