Science Porn
RE: Science Porn
Pastel pink and blue are the colors of subterfuge, not black.   It bothers you that the ships aren't black because you have a fetish, weirdo.   Wink

(I think that in actuality, ships will be designed to be noticed...not missed - I know it sounds counterproductive in context of military applications but bare with me...the greater concern in space is being lost, not found - isn't it?)
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Studying the differences and commonalities in these various star systems is giving great insight into the formation processes that generate planets.

Not sure how much aperture it would take (enormously more than Kepler has, that's for sure) but a similar mission to study a region of stars in the LMC for planets would be profoundly interesting.

I suppose I could find the 'average' distance to the Kepler patch and inverse square it out to 160,000 light years and get a number. If smaller than HST it would be a feasible mission . . . .

Seriously, this is science porn to me:

A Christian told me: if you were saved you cant lose your salvation. you're sealed with the Holy Ghost

I replied: Can I refuse? Because I find the entire concept of vicarious blood sacrifice atonement to be morally abhorrent, the concept of holding flawed creatures permanently accountable for social misbehaviors and thought crimes to be morally abhorrent, and the concept of calling something "free" when it comes with the strings of subjugation and obedience perhaps the most morally abhorrent of all... and that's without even going into the history of justifying genocide, slavery, rape, misogyny, religious intolerance, and suppression of free speech which has been attributed by your own scriptures to your deity. I want a refund. I would burn happily rather than serve the monster you profess to love.

So 21. In that little tiny sliver of sky, in that little tiny sliver of visible star stuff. Thinking
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

And we only see those with Kepler that are precisely aligned to dim their stars. We just saw with Mercury how rare that is...

I like the sentiment, but the number is unfortunately wrong. The visible Universe is much larger than 13.8 billion lightyears.

So...Kepler 1544-b on that chart appears to receive almost exactly the same amount of sunlight and is just slightly bigger than Earth. 1410-b is even closer in terms of size and receives slightly less sunlight. Of all the planets on there, those two are the most interesting to me O_O

Although most of these planets orbit stars less massive, and cooler than the sun.  That means these stars are disproportionally dim compared to their diameters.  Therefore the habitable zone around these stars are also disproportionally closer to the star relative to the diameter of star.  Since a high percentage of these planets appear to orbit inside the inner bounds of the habitable zone, it is clear most of these planets orbit far closer to their Stars in relation to the size of their Stars than any planet in the solar system.

So we can expect of these planets, a high proportion can be expected to be seen transiting their stars more frequently than Mercury.

One point of fine print, sort of a fly in the ointment, for the illustrated habitable zone is this:

While a star's brightness decreases much faster than its mass, it's gravitational pull does not.  This means the smaller the star, the more extreme any planets in its habitable zone will feel the tidal forces of its sun's gravity.  So a high percentage of those planets in the lower part of that diagram are likely to be tidal locked to their stars.  This can not be good for their habitability even if the amount of energy they receive from their sun would otherwise place them in the habitable zone.
