My embarassing story and a favor
June 9, 2014 at 5:00 pm
Hi, my name is Rob.
I grew up catholic and have been struggling with what I was taught for years.
For example, the whole "sex is bad" thing. That messed me up to the point where I couldn't get it up as a teen. Luckily I got over it.
Anyways, I'm writing a book about how religious teachings really mess people up, and how they've overcome it.
I think that would help a ton of people. Waaay too many people walking around with guilt and shame because of what they were force fed when they were younger.
And I would love to hear some of your stories, and possibly put them in the book (of course, I would hide your name if you want to).

First off, welcome aboard!
I think I was lucky in that I don't think religion ever messed me up at all. I've heard some horror stories though. You'll find your anecdotes!
Good luck on that book, brah.

Well, being raised as a Christian we were taught in Sunday School that premarital sex was bad. I never even watched porn or masturbated, I thought it was a sin. But when I finally came to enlightenment a couple months ago (I'm 17) it was a bit saddening for the first day, then the relief hit me. I felt like I had just gotten out of a Soviet labour camp after spending my whole life there, and it felt awesome. A couple weeks later I finally started to watch porn and hit on girls, now I had nothing to be ashamed about. Religion in general (but probably not every religion) keeps people from experiencing some of lifes pleasures.

As a kid I just found catholicism silly and boring.
I had to wait until I was much older to develop a firm dislike for the sons-of-bitches.

I'm afraid I won't be much help to you. I grew up in a religiously divided place in one of the most ferociously religious areas of the western world. Mum was devout but not pushy, Da was a free thinker, and only nominally Catholic. I went to Mass and Sunday school, was never molested by a priest (although there were a couple of novitiate nuns who figured prominently in some dreams that could have gotten me excommunicated), and in all had a gloriously happy childhood.
I think that from a very early age I had an inkling that the whole set up was a fraud, and so I suppose I never took it seriously enough to do me any lasting harm, much in the same way that 'Little Red Riding Hood' failed to instill in me a fear of talking wolves.
