The Apple Event

RE: The Apple Event
It's an eco system thing isn't it. Nothing wrong with choice. For what I expect are most people, it's about marketing hype and design over content. 50% of the price is made up of marketing and design costs. Look at beats headphones. Same deal. On the other hand, I wish all software was as polished as apples old offerings.

Yeah, I get that. My dissatisfaction with IOS and Apple in general started when I became interested in starting to develop apps for mobile devices.

Apple: pay $99/year and buy a Mac (at least a grand, closer to two grand for anything portable and suitable for development).

Android: Download a free developer kit that integrates with the IDE I already have.

As much as I wouldn't mind having a nice Macbook Pro, I don't have a couple grand lying around to dabble in app development. :p

I can definitely see where that would be a pain. I think that when my MacBook Pro from 2010 craps out (which it's starting to because the A key on the keyboard doesn't work and the optical drive doesn't burn to blank DVDs any more), then I might just get a PC and Hackintosh it.

Also, this is great: http://theoatmeal.com/comics/apple
Luke: You don't believe in the Force, do you?

Han Solo: Kid, I've flown from one side of this galaxy to the other, and I've seen a lot of strange stuff, but I've never seen *anything* to make me believe that there's one all-powerful Force controlling everything. 'Cause no mystical energy field controls *my* destiny. It's all a lot of simple tricks and nonsense.

Stock version that came with the S5 Active when it was released - 4.4.2

Such low hanging fruit it is a potato.

No excuse for that at all. I only know this cause I needed to copy a block of text off and found myself confused. iOS has spoiled me.

Android APIs and development is still pretty shitty (much better than 2.x days - ugh).

Without IntelliJ, I would've dropped an asteroid on Google.

I do wish Apple would drop their anti JIT bias. It would be nice to use PyPy. The best we have is Kivy, a Cython-CPython monstrosity.

I doubt it's "stock", unless by stock you mean the version hacked together by your carrier. Big Grin The only devices I am aware of that come with "stock" android are Google-branded ones, like the Nexus line.

I don't doubt that IOS APIs are more mature, nor do I doubt that IOS has many advantages. Certainly, we can agree that there are things in each environment that suck - and it's likely we'd agree on many of the specifics.

I hear you with respect to IntelliJ - without it, I'd have dropped a bomb on Java. Then again, I've got plenty of rocks to throw JetBrains' direction as well. Overall, though, it saves me far more time than it costs me - particularly compared to developing with the standard GNU toolchain (though that admittedly is an apples-oranges comparison).
