Politics is a social phenomenon, as is religion. Both effect each other through the medium of the society. Each religion certainly imprints a unique distortion upon the society medium, and that in turn effects politics in those societies in characteristic ways.

Yes, jihad is often a politically motivated, and uses religion only for justification. But politics that gave rise to jihad requires the unique effect of Islam upon the society.
