Why do Christians trust the Bible?

I think I see the problem here. So long as you can equate the scientific method with "it says so in this ancient book" you can pretend that atheists are just as befuddled as Christians. But we don't just get "told" by scientists and researchers. The world runs on technologies that require a lot more than some researcher making stuff up, and humanity has accomplished things that wouldn't work if we were just trusting what some researcher said in a journal.

Your book says the world is a flat circle with the sky stretched over it like a tent. The "researchers" said differently. Which one do you believe today?
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

lol I am very far from 'hav[ing] lost the plot.' Your vast misunderstanding of science and the scientific community is entertaining to me, especially in relation to your comparison of it to the Bible and Christianity.

A community of trained professionals working together to validate a set of claims based on OBSERVABLE FACT is largely different from someone saying 'The Bible said so therefore it's true.' Your failure to grasp that tells me that you're either a troll or just simply stupid. Either way it is entertaining.
“Love is the only bow on Life’s dark cloud. It is the morning and the evening star. It shines upon the babe, and sheds its radiance on the quiet tomb. It is the mother of art, inspirer of poet, patriot and philosopher.

It is the air and light of every heart – builder of every home, kindler of every fire on every hearth. It was the first to dream of immortality. It fills the world with melody – for music is the voice of love.

Love is the magician, the enchanter, that changes worthless things to Joy, and makes royal kings and queens of common clay. It is the perfume of that wondrous flower, the heart, and without that sacred passion, that divine swoon, we are less than beasts; but with it, earth is heaven, and we are gods.” - Robert. G. Ingersoll

Now if an astronomer says that the earth is trillions of years old, you believe it? Why? Because you trust him, and not his discovery.

In the same way, we trust the Bible and the word of our Lord Jesus Christ.

When I ask you for the proof that the world is trillion years old, you say its in the book. When you ask us for proof, we also say its in the Book. Get the idea?

Let me make sure I'm understanding this:

Your straight-faced, grown-up answer is that you believe that naked belief in a book of supernatural claims is the same as peer-reviewed experiments with observable and repeatable results?

Did you even read my original post? It looks like you're just responding to the thread title. My points are that, just looking at the source material, large swaths of the Bible are written by people who witnessed events no one else did or by people who claim divine revelation.

How do you know Paul's revelations are legitimate? This goes beyond having faith in God. You have to have faith in a guy who says he has faith in God and started writing letters to other people to tell them about it.

Actually - most xtians do not trust the bible = most of them completely ignore the old Testament -

But the christ supposedly said

"It is easier for Heaven and Earth to pass away than for the smallest part of the letter of the law to become invalid." (Luke 16:17 NAB)

"Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest part or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place." (Matthew 5:17 NAB)

"All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness..." (2 Timothy 3:16 NAB)

“Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law" (John7:19) and “For the law was given by Moses,..." (John 1:17).

“...the scripture cannot be broken.” --Jesus Christ, John 10:35

And that is the crux of cherry picking scripture. Those who pick and choose what scripture they will submit too obviously think they know better than God.

Basing one's participation in a religion on brazen arrogance seems like something that needs pointed out more, and denouncing the cherry pickers should be something we hear MUCH more from those actually and sincerely religious, but we don't.

"cherry pickers" is an Idiom phrase in English that means ones who only choose SOME things and not others.

YOU will often see a Cafeteria or Smorgasbord used to mean the same thing - although they specifically refer to Places that serve many different types of foods on the same counter - where you choose the ones you want to eat.
