I believe in the existence of our soul, but I can't prove it to you.  Anyway, as Jenny pointed out earlier, the bible has much to say about us being in our bodies during the afterlife.  It also refers to a "new earth" which he had prepared for us.  When we die the soul survives and the body dies.  On the final day, our bodies will be resurrected and will be reunited with our souls.  Obviously, we will be living in a physical place after that time.  I believe that the soul that survives earthly death is the essence of who we are and will retain all our memories and so on, and that we will recognize the people that we have known on earth.

Hello. I shouldn't have used the word 'prove' - I know you can't prove a soul any more than I can disprove one. But it doesn't make any sense to me why or how the soul could hold the personality when in life the brain does that job - why have a brain in the first place if the soul can do all its jobs? In my understanding of the brain the most the soul could ever be was the focal point where everything in the brain converged, though I don't believe that either, and in that case it would be the same for everyone because our individuality is stored in the brain.

Okay.  You said it and that settles it!

Now speaking hypothetically a soul would be just pure energy it wouldn't have memories because memories are stored in the brain.
So it would take nothing with it. But even still it would violate energy conservation if god were to take out out of this existence into a another.

If you died.. you'd be restored to "health". That's the bible talking, not me. My brain hurts from that little book. The pain it causes is a disdain I feel for people pushing this crap on people/children.

They aren't doing a service to the children. It would be for the best to never teach them about god and or jesus because they have the
get into heaven free card.

This is funny.
I was recently watching "Casper" the friendly ghost with my 7 year old, and one of the things I kind of liked about it was that all the ghosts lost their memories and personalities when they died. They continued to exist but became basically blank slates. Of course then it got all into, love can fix it! Bleh, it's a movie.

Anyway, I don't believe in a soul either, but if there is some sort of energy left after we die, it would by necessity be like that, a blank slate and not that person at all, because the thing that makes you YOU is your brain.

I'd recommend the book "What The Buddha Taught" by Walpola Sri Rahula. In it it talks about what the Buddha, as a person, taught and there is nothing metaphysical about it. He comes across as an expert in psychology and the ideas make a lot of sense. If I were to follow any 'religion' that would be it but at that point in time it was not a religion, just the teachings of a wise man who never claimed to be anything other than that - he did not believe in any god nor claim to speak for any god.

To you, with your knowledge, today.  Consider the possibility that you are lending the buddha wisdom that the buddha (a comical notion to begin with) did not, himself - possess.

-food for thought.

The same could be said about any religion (or religious figurehead), of course. Namely, that all of "the ignorant shit" came later. Thats a tremendously generous claim for any religion, I think. Just imagine how great the world would be if christianity hadn't been corrupted by that damned pagan church?
