Ask a Brummie

RE: Ask a Brummie
Had to look up barnet...
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

You do say "loike" and "ploice", it's noticeable then

Do you try to make your accent more neutral? I do this with my yorkshire accent because it sounds so stupid, i've done it for so long my natural accent is a neutral one now

And when you suspend your individual beauty you also give up a lot of your humanity. You will do things in the name of a group that you would never do on your own. Injuring, hurting, killing, drinking are all part of it, because you've lost your identity, because you now owe your allegiance to this thing that's bigger than you are and that controls you.”  - George Carlin

I think my accent has naturally become a little more neutral since I came to uni, as I've been living with all Southern housemates who have made it their lifes' goals to "make him talk civilised"!! LMAO

Well done, lad!

The only thing that stuck out to me was "Catholic." Seems like you separate the 't' and the 'h,' no?

Also, people from 'Murrica really stress the 'h' in Birmingham. My brother lives in Birmingham, Alabama, and they pronounce it Burr-ming-hamm.

ETA: Holy shit you sound like Karl Pilkington!!!!

RE: Ask a Brummie
most British people say it "Cath-lick" but my family have always said it how I say it. There's an "o" in it and every other language says it with a "t" instead of a "th" haha. "Saint" has always been "san" among my family as well, so I've picked that up too.

And yeah I remember I went to see Black Eyed Peas in concert a few years back and Will.I.Am kept saying "BirmingHAAAM" it amused me.

Do we all sound the same to you? Karl Pilkington is from Manchester, he has a completely different accent to me

I think it's more your inflection and tone than the accent. Now that I think of it the accents aren't really that close.

My accent is also neutral. My mom is from London and my dad is from Portsmouth so even living in Birmingham most of my life the mishmash of accents has left me without one.
