Seriously, you wanna see me in church?  Serve good food.  I'm not going to believe in any god, but I'll donate some cash to the food fund.

RE: ATHEIST CHURCH?
If there were a get together in my area I don't think I'd attend. Prior to coming to this site I had no conception of an atheist community. I found this place by accident. I get enough atheist exchange of ideas here.

One definition of religion is "a pursuit or interest to which someone ascribes supreme importance". A church would be the place to practice that religion. Kind of seems to me that most of us fit that definition of religion (although I've been wrong before). If they call it an atheist (et al) church or religion do they get the tax breaks, free city/county/state/federal services, legal protection, special parking spaces around town, separate toilets (insert drooling here), ........? If yes, then what the HELL, call it a church or religion. How can a word hurt? So what if the theists (or anyone else for that matter) say something negative? Ooo, Ouch, Stop. If that does offend people in the atheist community take away atheist and substitute another word such as reason, logic, rationality, flying spaghetti monster, ........ Choose which ever is the most suitable. I would not give a rats ass as long as it get the breaks that religions get.
I don't have an anger problem, I have an idiot problem.

Yeah, I'm really not one for groups IRL either. They make me uncomfortable, regardless of whether they're religious/philosophical in nature or not. That's one of the reasons why I find the idea of gleefully going to church completely alien to me. Same with the whole "Don't you want a loving god to watch over you?" crap. If given the choice to be in a group or be independent, I'd choose independence every time, and it's not even close. It must be a psychological thing stemming from me always having an actual chaperone figure in my life nearly 24/7 due to my disability. I instinctively recoil from anything that would further impede what little independence I do have.

I guess this disability is good for more than good parking spaces and sponge baths after all Tongue

I think on occasion it might be nice to meek like minded people in your area. However, I would not prefer the idea of needing a designated building and time similar to that of the institutions we dislike. I'm not sure if I would attend an atheist "church" and I certainly wouldn't want to call it church.

I do find the whole thing a bit creepy.

I would hope that it would be a temporary measure for those coming out of religion who have been so heavily indoctrinated that they feel helpless without it.
