I meant none of their higher ups. I'm sure if a regular civilian said that, some jackass would haul them to jail to "teach them a lesson", but they're not going to throw a police chief in a cell for saying it.

Because some people were idealists who thought as long as people in power had limits, we wouldn't have a fascist dictatorship or theocracy, but in reality anyone in power will do their best to slowly sand off all limits to their power. A little change here, and a little change there, and by the time the people notice something's wrong you've turned a representative republic into a theocratic oligarchy. Or as relevant to this thread, a fascist police state.

Perhaps we should start paying them per head (still attached and breathing, ofc, to avoid any ambiguity in how their salaries are calculated)?

Some want to make it so a cop who loses a a lawsuit for brutality would be responsible for 20% of that settlement. If that ever happens it might make cops less like to pull this shit.
