I don't know. Would I kill someone to save a stranger? I know if someone looked like they were about to kill my nieces, I'd beat them half to death even if there were other options on hand. Of course this assumes I'm any good with a gun anyway. Tongue Probably the best thing for the both of us is if the one without the weapon hid behind me, and the would-be killer didn't call my bluff when I said I'd pull the trigger if he didn't back off.

Here is something else. This scenario makes no account of the weapon I am using. For example if I'm using a knife, it will we much quicker to hamstring the killer then actually kill him. People can take a long time to die.

Actually, I don't think this is the same thing. In the case of the fat man, you are killing one person to save several others. Unless I am mistaken, the hypothetical scenario presented here is killing one to save one. The question seems more to be about whether you would assume the aggressor was in the wrong with sufficient conviction to kill him/her at a moment's notice rather than if would you be willing to kill someone for a net gain of lives.

This is situational, so to be intellectually honest, I don't think I can give an answer that would be true in all scenarios.
Which is better:
To die with ignorance, or to live with intelligence?

Truth doesn't accommodate to personal opinions.
