I wish.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

0.999... is an asymptote and an idea or representation, but not truly a number, ergo, the apples and oranges. In both equations, 0.9 is valid, 0.99, 0.999 etc. to 0.999... at which point it ceases to be a number of any real value other than a representation.  The inverse would be 1. ...001 ...001 ...001 which is obviously invalid and the number added to make it 1 would be 0.000...1 (10 raised to a negative infinity or 100 raised to a negative infinity or 1000 raised to a negative infinity), again an invalid number.  In the first formula I presented, we can play the game of it is close enough, however, the second formula has two different asymptotes depending on the direction approached.  Zeros are tough enough, but once any type of infinity is placed anywhere in any equation or number, all ceases to be anything but a representation of an idea.

Like I said, there is a god/there is no god.  Obviously, none of us intend to change sides.

0.999... is categorically not an asymptote. Asymtotes apply to graphs of functions, not numbers.

0.999... is a fixed value, it's not a function.

This is not really up for debate; it's a fact of mathematics, as any competent mathematician will tell you. Of course I'm not going to change sides; I'm aware of the facts. You should change sides because you clearly don't understand what you are talking about. Don't let ignorance of something cloud your thinking; it's fine to accept something as true without fully understanding why it is. I accept a load of parts of physics as true without understanding them, because ultimately physicists study this thing for a living and presumably know what they are talking about.

As always, it depends on the source.  Dead Horse

Right, and when 99.999% of sources agree on one thing, you really want to be the person who thinks the 0.001% are correct. </sarcasm>

Here's some sources you should go check out: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/0.999...#References

If there's anything worse than ignorance of math, it's willful ignorance of math.

Willful ignorance is the kind of ignorance that pisses me off.

It makes even less sense to claim that convergent geometric series are not numbers when considering that the way one usually constructs the real numbers is by defining them as equivalence classes of series.

Guys. His argument should also conclude that pi is also not a real number, but an idea.
