Yeah, I almost posted that as well, but decided not to overkill it.  I like the Moll performance better, personally, though I also really like the slower Furtwangler as well.

I have never heard the newer one you posted.  I dig it!  Very good singing, and the weird modern stage kind of triggers new neurons.

Honestly, I mostly put the second performance there as a way of saying, "the traditional staging might seem staid, but at least it's not this," with strange things like:
  • Why is the set, which is, if memory serves, meant to be The Commendatore condemning Don Giovanni to Hell, done in so much white that it looks like a representation of Heaven?
  • Why does the statue of The Commendatore look absolutely nothing like a statue?
  • Why are the bikini babes there? They could be a substitute for the demons who carry him into Hell, but they don't really do anything. They just stand there and walk around the set a bit. Also, apparently, if photos are to be believed, there is apparently a scene where they're zombies, which makes no sense.
  • On that note, what's that string some of them are wearing around their midriff, and why are only a few of them wearing it?
  • Why do they stage it to look like Leporello's being framed for stabbing Don Giovanni?
  • Why does Leporello dress like Raj from The Big Bang Theory?
The video is frequently linked to as how bad regietheatre can be. Fortunately, at least they've got Thomas Hampson singing it.

As mentioned before, Michael Haneke, one of my favourite directors, did his own version of it in the same year (and it was revived last year, no less) and it seems interesting if a bit more restrained.

Alas, this clip is all I've been able to find.

I don't think it's bad at all. I don't exactly know why they made those changes, but there are so many things to think about by inverting some aspects of the context. For example, the bikini babes in white clearly represent his heaven, and so ultimately it is heaven's gate that serves as the doorway to his condemnation.

Apparently, it started in 1951, when Wieland Wagner realised that, if he wanted to revive the Bayreuth festival after 12 years of the Nazis heavily endorsing it, they'd have to change the way they interpreted Wagner's operas. It started with more abstract stagings of plays like Parsifal, but eventually, the approach became successful and other directors started to copy it, taking other operas and either taking them out of their original context to illuminate several themes for modern audiences or to just create new shocking imagery to attract them.

Honestly, I think it can work easily, just not there.
