How politically correct are you?

RE: How politically correct are you?
I would say I'm very PC. I think politeness is very productive to society. I do however refuse to use any of the ______- American terms, because I belive it promotes diversity to the pooint of segregation (in a negative sense) rather then unity as a nation. I'd even go so far as tosay I'm willing to limit free speech enough to sign a petition to ban the terms entirely.
"There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word 'Christian' has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry." -- Philip Stater, Huffington Post

I would never go so far as to ban words that are offensive. I believe so completely in the right of people to say what they wish, no matter how offensive it is.

I wholeheartedly agree, Eilonnwy. But I also agree with this particular sentiment:

Which is what I mean when I say that PCness can be taken too far.

Well don't forgot, race is not the sole PC issue.

I work in a place that has English, Australian, Scottish, Indian, Welsh,Kiwi,German etc staff members.

The racial insults fly thick and fast and you know what?,

No-one gets upset or insulted. We all take the "insults" in the manner that they are intended.

Just remember that a wise man cannot be insulted.

For if it is the truth it is not an insult, if it is not truth you can ignore it.

I doubt that I can quantify how P.C. one is, but I'm pretty sure I can safely say I'd be far towards the non PC end of the scale. I often refer to my own racial aggregate as "honkies," and I tend to usually say "Black", preferring it to "African-American", partly because A) it's succinct, B) because all of humanity comes from Africa, thus making the claim to have African ancestry to be redundant, C) because there are white people in Africa who moved to America (like Charlize Theron and Dave Matthews) more deserving of the hyphenate, and D) most black people I've known don't seem to have much of a problem with the term anyway. However, I do tend to not like racist jokes, mainly because my taste in tasteless humor tends to lean strongly towards jokes about sex and violence, as opposed to melanin content.

The trouble with PC vocabulary, is that soon the new words used to refer to the groups it describes may acquire the same negative connotations as the original words used and become just as offensive, ultimately failing to address the complex social issues underneath.
