Of Mice and Men...
#51
RE: Of Mice and Men...
Thanks everyone.

Vorlorn, yes, I started taking folic acid the same day that I found out - 2 days ago. I appreciate your concern.

I'm still mourning the loss of the much anticipated new nose that never was, but I am starting to feel a little better about my baby when I don't associate him/her with that. My husband and I talked about baby names yesterday. We like Sebastian for a boy, and Giselle for a girl. We want something that isn't too American and isn't too common, but at the same time, isn't too weird.

Maybe I'll start a thread about that soon.

Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

Plan ahead, C/L.  Think what nicknames their friends will call them in 15 years.

"Sebastian" will be "Bastard" and "Giselle" will be "Gizzy."

This is why "Joe" and "Jane" were popular for many years.

First of all, ummm, what?? I'm pregnant?? I hadn't even missed a period yet. My period wasn't even due to start for another few days.

The rhythm method ain't all it's cracked up to be.

Congratulations on your impending motherhood, sweetie.

Thank you, Thump. You always talk about how being a father has been such an amazing thing for you. That helps me feel better about the whole thing.

And yeah, we weren't even doing the rhythm thing. We just assumed since I didn't get pregnant when we were trying, I certainly wasn't going to when we weren't. Life is funny sometimes.

Ugh. I love the name Giselle, but I have thought about how it sounds like jizz....  Undecided

Do you think it's really bad? I mean, is that the first thing that comes to mind when you hear that name??

I'm still working on my first cup of coffee and it popped right into my head.

As someone who is almost qualified as a health professional, let me say that's total BS. If you want to have half a glass of wine while pregnant no one can show it's harmful. And things need to be put into perspective in any case. Even if the procedure is harmful while pregnant - in the first 2 weeks it's not going to do diddaly squat. And by that I mean anything that harmful will just abort the zygote, not cause ongoing developmental harm to it.

I was hearing on the radio recently about a lady that was denied a coffee because she was (obviously) pregnant. And to be honest at her stage of pregnancy caffeine can be harmful to the child, that's not theory it's a fact. There's no known safe level. But that said, health advice allows women to have two coffees a day. So I do disagree with refusing her a coffee, but if the barrister knows that caffeine is harmful to pregnancy I don't disagree with his choice either. I also kind of respect the other point of view and I would have preferred to have heard the lady say something like "health advice is I can have two coffees so it should be fine" which she didn't say (on the radio). When people don't know what's advised then they're in a position where they're not able to defend themselves the way they should be.

Anyway, I'm very sorry to hear about that situation sounds like you are certainly in the right. Smile

But you are not qualified as a lawyer.  That doctor was practicing "defensive medicine" as in, "if I do it and something goes wrong I get sued and my malpractice insurance rates go up."  The US does not have enough doctors but we have way too many fucking lawyers.

Well I wouldn't have gone through with it even if the doc was ok with it.

I know a couple who decided to start trying for a baby and figured it would take a while to happen - a month later she was pregnant.  Life has a sense of humor sometimes Tongue

The first thing I think of when I hear the name Gizelle is this:

But that's just me... Tongue

I agree with Min that you should definitely keep in mind the sorts of nicknames your kid might have when considering names, but keep in mind, also, that kids can be endlessly inventive with cruel nicknames even with the most normal of names - and even with nicknames that bear no resemblance to the child's given name at all. So in the end, maybe the lesson is: Name the kid whatever you want. Smile

I think of Gisele Bündchen, who's Brazilian like you. Coincidence?

I absolutely love being a father as well ( having been at it for 9 months only). If you take everything with a sense of humor, it can be a blast (although exhausting). I just tried to refrain from sharing unsolicited war stories because you're still so early.

Yeah, it's a very Brazilian name, which is why I chose it. I like girl names that end with "A", but my last name also ends in A... so it would just sound dumb. I think the name Giselle Claire Bertka has a nice ring to it.
