I agree that it sucks that marriages have to wait. Apparently the reasoning behind it is if they decided to uphold prop 8 they don't want another hundred of marriages to then rule on if they stay or not, or something to that effect.
I was listening to an expert on it who stated that the appeals court have fast-tracked the court date to December. Decision will likely be made early 2011. Whoever loses will definitely appeal to the supreme court, they will likely hear the case around October 2011 and announce their decision in spring 2012. If that time line holds true, we could be in for a Supreme court decision that will definitely change the way the US deals with marriage. Obviously, hopefully it will result in same sex marriage being legal everywhere in the US.
