Using the ice sheet as a radio may increase the chance of detecting a neutrino, but won't that also increase the risk of detecting more interference from other particles?
Indeed. The cool thing is that they wait for Neutrinos to produce a coherent radio wave pulse coming out of the ice - no other particles can travel far through the ice to produce such an interaction - so, the source of the radio signal deep in the ice is basically shielded.

Isn't this just lovely? And it's cheap as dirt compared to other experiments.

Thanks, don't you just love science  I presume in the future they could (again pondering through ignorance) maybe use this system for other experiments ..... assuming they can differentiate the depth of the signals discover other particles or what they are doing?
I think other spin offs from this new technique will follow
