500 Million Yahoo Accounts Hacked

RE: 500 Million Yahoo Accounts Hacked
If someone hacked my yahoo account all they'd find is my fantasy football team. Maybe they'd do a better job than me of running it. Why did I take Jonathan Stewart again?

RE: 500 Million Yahoo Accounts Hacked
I was locked out of my yahoo account in 2014. I just ditched it and switched to gmail.
This may explain why that happened, at least.

Another reason not to use Yahoo.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-37618575

Quote:Yahoo has denied that it has made it deliberately difficult for customers to migrate to another email provider.

It follows the disabling of an email-forwarding feature which allows people to migrate automatically.

Yahoo said it was a "temporary" move while it worked on improvements.

The firm is dealing with fallout from a massive breach of customer data and accusations that it allowed the US government to spy on emails.

In a statement to the BBC, Yahoo said: "We're working to get auto-forward back up and running as soon as possible because we know how useful it can be to our users. The feature was temporarily disabled as part of previously planned maintenance to improve its functionality between a user's various accounts. Users can expect an update to the auto-forward functionality soon. In the meantime, we continue to support multiple account management. "

But some of its customers were not convinced.

There was actually another reason, even before that one.

Quote:Serious human rights concerns have been raised by a Reuters report that Yahoo (YHOO.O) had scanned the emails of hundreds of millions of users at the request of a U.S. intelligence service, a United Nations' human rights advocate said on Friday.

Pretty much same here.

Same here.

Quote:I've been thinking about setting up my own email server though.

Speaking from experience, it's generally not worth the trouble. If you're on a VPS or dedicated server, your IP is probably in a lot of blacklists from prior owners of that IP or in your block.

I stopped self-hosting email probably 10 years ago.

Yeah, the thought had occurred to me and I never bothered to look into it any further. I've migrated over to a new email service and couldn't be happier.
