I bet the textbook publishing company absolutely LOVES these assholes. Usually he'd only get the opportunity to reprinting the text books every other decade.

Think of our states as little countries then.

You'd be hard pressed to find one that wasn't.

I haven't posted an introduction yet, so forgive me for jumping in, but I thought I'd give y'all another opinion from a Texan.

Ah yes, my great state has been embarrassing itself more than usual lately. Don't expect it to change, there are too many backing the fucktards on the State Board. In fact, when the first round went through for debate, every Democrat and the more intelligent Republicans walked out...literally walked out. There were thousands protesting the ignorance the Board is trying to spread, but alas, they just don't give a shit. They are convinced the rest of us are trying to indoctrinate (hah! the irony!) their children into believing a false history. Apparently, the history textbooks are too hard on the Christians (thanks to the Atheists and Liberals infiltrating this country's values), paint McCarthy as a bad man, don't show the true evil of the terrorist religion of Islam, and misrepresent the founding fathers who they believe wanted a Christian nation where Christian morals/beliefs are taught (excluding that horrible man, Thomas Jefferson) among other things. Not to mention we Atheists (and Liberals which are automatically assumed to be Atheists) are the evil scum of the earth.

Basically, they believe the textbooks as they are, are full of Atheist/Liberal propaganda. Any evidence to the contrary was ignored. Several members admitted they want a Conservative curriculum. Some of them also believe America is the nation chosen by God to be the light of the world and therefore American Exceptionalism should be taught with globalization seen as a deliberate attempt to undermine America. To be fair, not every Republican on the board, nor every Christian for that matter, feels this way, but the large majority certainly do.

I love my state and I love being Texan, but damn, why do the idiots have to be in control? Oh, did I mention the Board members don't even bother hiding that many of them are Evangelical and part of the Christian Right (which would be fine if they'd leave it out of the boardroom, but noooo...)? Oh, and that they believe Christian values, a literal interpretation of the Bible (well, many of them want this), and Creationism should be taught in public school? They actually want Creationism taught as an alternative to evolution, as if it is just as plausible, with just as much (or more) scientific evidence supporting it.

Anyone who tries to point out errors in their arguments or "facts," is deemed unpatriotic, socialist, liberal, Atheist, or worse.

...Hey, anyone wanna come down and help me round up the morons? Maybe, we can sacrifice them to appease the Gods. Big Grin

Welcome, and thanks. I've been trying to get my friend to join this forum and he'll be glad to know there's at least one other sane person in Texas. We keep hearing of them...but it's like trying to catch sight of a rare white elk. Big Grin

It's frustrating to people outside of Texas because the media gives so much room to the fucktards (LOVE that word, btw!), and very little to anyone else. So when faced with stories of textbook changes that could potentially affect the rest of the country, we have to wonder what the hell exactly is going on inside those borders. There are blog/forum noises that there are actual educators working against the bureaucrats and dentists currently running the board to raise education standards, but I guess it makes for a better story to point and laugh - "haha, look at what Bush's state is still doing!" - than to focus on what the unsung heroes are doing.

Snort...rare white elk indeed. Big Grin Tell him to join, I'm actually not far from Plano (30 minutes tops), there are more of us around here than other parts of the state.

Haha, it is a fun word, isn't it? Tongue

Trust me, it's frustrating to many of us as well. I kept turning off the news because my blood pressure was shooting through the roof and the poor kitty was hiding. You're right too, the media doesn't pay much attention to those who trying to fight them by changing how the Board is appointed, etc. Unfortunately, the Board has near absolute power and is overwhelmingly Evangelical, so those who oppose them have little say in the matter. They are set in their ways and their beliefs. They refuse to listen to the other side and won't give the time of day to anyone who doesn't agree with their desires (even other Conservatives who merely point out they are doing exactly what they accused the Liberals of doing).

I don't know, it's all so....disappointing. I knew we were a state with a high number of fundies and ignorant bigots, but it's getting ridiculous, something like this shouldn't be allowed to happen. I vote the rest of the states follow California's lead (though I don't know what ever came of their talks) and consider barring Texas influenced texts from their classrooms. At least it would give me an alternative for when my stepdaughter enters grade school.
