Well it's heading that way in the US. It will just take another generation or two for the old to die out, and make way for the progressive youth.

If you subtract the folks who are members of ludicrously false religions (looking at you Mormons) and the staggering number of folks incessantly searching Scriptures for verses to adhere to that won't be in any way inconvenient for them personally, and the cohorts in it for the money (looking at you Pat Robertson, etal) I'd say actual sincere God belief is down to <1% of the population.
The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.

I think the whole thing about that in the end times was mostly written to scare people. If they're not afraid enough of hell get them to fear that too.
Or maybe they really did see a future where people would stop believing the bullshit. Not through divine inspiration but through reason.
They probably knew of other religions on the decline.

Western European culture's general trend has been to encourage all but the most moronic of the society to become more intelligent and informed, and for the elite to accommodate this or know they could go to the guillotine in some foreseeable future.
The trend in American culture has been the reverse. It has been to encourage a very small elite act as if they truly owe no one anything nor could be obligated to temper their greed to enable other to survive, but instead to think up ever more perverse and devious ways to make the less intelligence half of the society more moronic and ignorant so they can be made to support the elite's personal financial interests while retaining the fiction that it is really a working democracy of which they are a part.
