What about the members of the 1st SS Panzer Division? They gladly died for their fuhrer.
Humans believing bullshit and acting accordingly is far too common an example in history to mean much of anything. 
I think CL is saying that if you are part of a scam and a lie from its inception, and that you took part and participated in the full knowledge that what you are saying and teaching is not true, then you are less likely to be willing to die for it.
As opposed to being taken in by a con, and believing things which simply are not true.
