Done with my nursing class

Now I have a three day weekend, and then on Tuesday I have "new hire orientation" at the nursing home where I get to set up my schedule for working the overnight shift.  I am looking forward to working.  I am a night person and I am tired of waking up so early in the morning.  Not only that, but I will make an extra dollar an hour working the overnight shift: ca-ching!

Anywho, even though I will be "working" at the nursing home, it will still be a training process since I cannot do much of anything without my license.  The nursing home will be working with me to set a date for my state exam so that I can become certified.  I'm a little bit nervous about taking the exam, but I'm positive that I will pass it (so long as I am not given pulse or respiration during the skills section).

I am very excited to be a nursing assistant.

Having gone through my mother being in a nursing home, knowing what staff has to go through, I have nothing but admiration for them. I will say however, because of corporate greed, it also frustrated me that the private company running it didn't do enough to keep the place fully staffed. But that is what you get with 36 years of government letting big businesses do whatever they want.

Good luck, and kudos to you. You have picked a very noble and needed job.

Congratulations, Kit. I hope you enjoy your work.

Any plans to further this over with additional studies over time? There is a chronic shortage of LPNs and RNs. You would never want for a job.

I keep hearing that LPNs are being phased out, so I was thinking of going for my RN.  The nursing home will reimburse me if I further my education, which will be a plus.

That would be great! You never know where it could lead. One of my daughters got her RN and just kept going. Now she's a nurse practitioner and in a really good place, professionally.

Food for thought.

I was just thinking the very same thing as Crossless. You can take it in phases, LPN first (bump in pay), then RN. Medical assistant is another option. Surgery tech?

My ex did it this way and ended up in the NICU.

Good for you! Keep up with your education, it's a good thing.

Well done, Kit.

Seems by the responses that I’ll have to be careful what I say about nurses in future.

Sounds good, but the rest of them can stick it.

Well, I never say anything bad about nurses.

Interns and junior doctors, yes.
